Carol Koebbeman is a Victoria artist best known for her contemporary portrait and figurative oil paintings but she also has an extensive background in fiber arts and in woodworking.
In the late 1980s, Carol started and ran her own business providing custom dyed silk cord for sale to discerning jewellers. She also created sculptural wall pieces using hand dyed silk cord to form curtains of colour. She was known for her intricate fabrics using the difficult technique of ikat, a method of dying patterns in fabric before it’s woven. In the early 2000s she turned to woodworking, creating studio furniture focused on contemporary design with traditional joinery techniques. In 2015 she was published in Fine Woodworking Magazine describing her method of cutting matching curves.
Today, Carol is exclusively a painter, primarily portraits. She has a great love for teaching and teaches both workshops and privately. She has exhibited her work in Canada and the US.
Carol has a BFA in Fibre Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute and is the current president of the Victoria Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
“I’m drawn to images of quiet moments of individuals lost in their own thought. I want to capture the emotions of people when they’re in their own environment and feeling safe. Most of us want to appear confident and brave as we march through life; I want to capture the times when we’re feeling confused or doubtful. I want to peel back the curtain and see something real.” -Carol Koebbeman
